New Mexico’s image has taken another blow as Forbes magazine has ranked it 47th on its list of best states for business in 2015.

Forbes ranked states in six categories, and New Mexico ranked near the bottom on three: labor supply, 45; economic climate, 49; and quality of life, 43. Its highest score was a rank of 27 for business costs.

“New Mexico ranks in the bottom six overall for a third straight year largely due to a weak labor supply and lousy current economic climate,” Forbes said. “New Mexico has the worst employment growth in the U.S. over the past five years. The state also fares poorly on quality of life metrics, a product of comparatively low school test scores and high crime.”

New Mexico’s low rank was made worse by the high ranks of surrounding states against which New Mexico competes for jobs and business. Utah placed first on the list, Colorado was fifth and Texas was sixth. Oklahoma came in 16th, Arizona placed 23rd and Nevada was 34th.

The three states that ranked lower than New Mexico wee Maine, Mississippi and West Virginia.
