County Selects New Attorney

Eleven people had applied for the job.

New Mexico state Rep. Ken Martinez will be the new county attorney for Bernalillo County.

The Democrat from Grants got the job on a 5-0 vote Friday, the county said in a news release. Martinez will replace the retiring Randy Autio, whose last day on the job was Friday.

It appears that Martinez, who has been a representative since 1999, will leave the Legislature, but not right away. “As part of the negotiations, the county will ask that Martinez not seek re-election to state House District 69,” the county said in a news release. The next legislative elections are in 2016. Martinez’s appointment is subject to final negotiations and a background check.

“Mr. Martinez brings a wealth of litigation experience and public policy expertise to Bernalillo County. We are fortunate to have him,” Commission Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins says. “I also want to thank Randy Autio for his many years of public service and the steady legal guidance he provided to Bernalillo County.”

Martinez is a Notre Dame graduate. He has worked in private practice at his law firm in Grants since 1984.
