The Albuquerque Comic Con returns for its sixth year with more celebs and Q&A panels than ever before. This epic three-day conference takes place the weekend of Jan. 8-10 at the Albuquerque Convention Center (401 Second St. NW). This year’s con brings a plethora of big names from the sci-fi and pop culture genres.
Standout guests include original “Star Trek” series stars Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) and Michael Dorn (Worf); Marky Ramone, drummer for American punk band The Ramones; “Star Wars” actor Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca); and legendary thespian Ron Perlman, known for roles in the Hellboy film franchise, the “Sons of Anarchy” series and French art flick “The City of Lost Children.”
Many celebrities only attend one day of the fest (usually Saturday), so coordinators advise consulting the schedule to ensure you’ll catch your favorite otherworldly icons. Bring extra cash and wear comfy shoes for scoring autographs and photos.
Three separate dealer areas will boast hundreds of vendors. Everyone from local comic artists to nationwide outlets will have an array of comic, gaming, science fiction and cosplay paraphernalia for sale. Events including a foosball tourney, a costume contest, speed dating, and celebrity and industry Q&A panel.
An after-party is scheduled for 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, Downtown at the DoubleTree (201 Marquette NW). This year’s convention was planned in coordination with the Albuquerque Film Festival (Jan. 7-10) with discounted tickets available toward both events.
