UNM Hikes Tuition, Fees

UNM Hikes Tuition, Fees

Why did UNM regents unanimously vote to increase tuition and student fees?

Increased Costs to Counteract Lack of Funding, Institutional Bonds

BY JUANI HOPWOOD

The University of New Mexico regents met this morning and unanimously approved a 2.5 percent increase in tuition and a 10 percent increase in student fees.

The tuition increase (along with planned cuts) will go toward covering the university’s $7.9 million deficit, UNM Director of Media Relations Dianne Anderson told the ABQ Free Press after the meeting this afternoon. Decreased funding from the state and dwindling enrollment numbers are the primary causes of UNM’s financial shortfall.

The increase in student fees had already been agreed upon before the meeting, and will fund institutional bond projects, including Anderson School of Management, Johnson Center and Smith Plaza/Union Square, Anderson said.

These increases will cost students an additional $286 each year.
