Free Press Wins Two Awards

Free Press Wins Two Awards

“For the sake of your tax dollars, do not vote for either of these two men,” the editorial said of then-Treasurer Manny Ortiz and former treasurer Patrick Padilla.

ABQ Free Press continued its string of award-winning journalism by taking two awards in the Society of Professional Journalists Top of the Rockies contest over the weekend.

Senior Editor Dan Vukelich and Publisher Will Ferguson won first place for a May 18, 2016 editorial that predicted Donald Trump’s ability to tap “into the dark side of America,” and that urged Bernalillo County voters to reject two candidates for the Treasurer’s office.

“For the sake of your tax dollars, do not vote for either of these two men,” the editorial said of then-Treasurer Manny Ortiz and former treasurer Patrick Padilla.

Free Press news editor Dennis Domrzalski placed third in column writing for a series of columns ripping the Albuquerque Rapid Transit project.

The Top of the Rockies contest featured journalists from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. The awards ceremony was held at the Denver Press Club.
