“Chile Capital Of The World” License Plate Available

“Chile Capital Of The World” License Plate Available

“Not only does chile play a significant role in our state’s culture – it is one of our state’s greatest treasures, and this license plate will let the world know.”

The new “Chile Capital Of The World” New Mexico license plate is finally available.

“With the creation of this license plate, we are sending a strong message that New Mexico is the only chile capital of the world,” Governor Susana Martinez said in a press release announcing the new license plate. “Not only does chile play a significant role in our state’s culture – it is one of our state’s greatest treasures, and this license plate will let the world know.”

Earlier Martinez vetoed legislation that would have created a specialty chile license plate whose funds would have went to educational programs with the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces. Rep. Cathrynn Brown, a Republican from Carlsbad sponsored the initial legislation to issue a chile license plate.

“…such a plate should be made available to all New Mexicans at no additional cost. That is why I have directed the Tourism Department to work with the Motor Vehicle Division to create a standard chile license plate that represents something that truly makes New Mexico true – our chile, with no additional fees,” Martinez wrote in her veto message.

Since it is not a specialty plate, it can be purchased for $6.50 if ordered online – a savings of $10 over purchasing in a field office. A $1.25 fee is added for online processing.
